Day 1 for Headteachers, Senior Leads and Maths Subject Leaders will focus on the principles, beliefs, systems and structures essential to transform mathematics in a primary school. In addition to focusing on establishing a secure and deep understanding of the four transformational strands of the STAR framework, the day will also establish what schools need to STOP doing!
• To establish a secure and deep understanding of the MathSTAR framework … 4 transformational strands that will make maths outstanding in your school;
• To share the ‘outstanding’ success stories from schools that have embraced the principles of the MathSTAR framework e.g. Special Measures to Outstanding in 3 and a half years, Greater Depth from 30% to 57%, Expected standard from 17% to 81% (50% pupil premium);
• To establish and understand the importance of a daily/weekly/yearly mathematics timetable with ‘Teach Up, Keep Up’ same day/week intervention sessions to support to raise standards, prevent attainment gaps and challenge all pupils;
• To develop clear and practical short, medium and long term action plans for maths in your school based on the STAR framework;

Steve Lomax (@MaxTheMaths) is Mathematics Strategic Lead for the Balcarras Teaching School Partnership and GLOWMaths Hub @GLOWmaths. He works to improve outcomes for maths in schools regionally and nationally through MaxTheMaths Consultancy and has been working with senior leaders, maths subject leaders, teachers and pupils for 25+ years.
Through his current, and previous roles of Mathematics Adviser for Gloucestershire (4-19), NCETM Specialist Adviser for Mathematics, Maths Subject Leader, SLT, AST and SLE, Steve is an outstanding teacher and has a proven track record, locally and nationally, of leading change in maths education. He has worked with maths teachers, in Shanghai as part of the National Maths Hubs research into the teaching for mastery in mathematics.
