Target Audience: This course is for any adult who works with pupils in nursery, reception and Year 1 (Key Stage 1).
Course Aim: To help teachers and learning support staff, learn how to turn scribbles into legible written words.
Course Content: This course will address your handwriting expectations and look at how difficult handwriting is to learn from a child’s perspective. It will review the core developmental stepping stones a child reaches, in order to become a proficient writer.
The morning will focus on the importance of gaining skills in muscle strength, visual perception and hand skills, teaching the steps of body stability, through to pencil grip and paper position using a whole class approach. It will look at what can realistically be achieved without needing extra 1 to 1 support. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to identify the child that needs extra support with handwriting.
The afternoon addresses how to set up a small group and what to do if you are working 1 to 1 with a child. It will examine examples of handwriting (brought by yourself). The analysis of problem areas and strategies for improvement will be shared, enabling everyone to learn from each other. During this time, you will have an opportunity to build upon your repertoire of handwriting resources by trying the activities that can make a real difference, even to the reluctant writer.
