This course will focus on ways to develop children’s reading comprehension. It will investigate effective practice in Guided Reading; how children make sense of text during and after reading; and focus on how to develop lines of enquiry by considering what texts have to offer.
09:00 – 09:40 Preparing for the lesson demonstration
• Wayne to work with a group of children (Year 5 or Year 6)
09:40 – 11:00 Developing a pedagogy
• Demonstration lesson (30 minutes approx.) followed by analysis
• Looking at planning
11:00 – 11:20 Break
11:20- 12:50 Developing subject knowledge
• How do children comprehend text?
12:50 – 13:30 Lunch
13:30 – 15.00 Investigating the potential of texts
• Informing planning by looking at what the text has to offer.
15:00 – 15:30 Planning time
• Time for collaborative planning
Delegates are requested to bring:
• A laptop/ tablet
A range of texts (3-4 texts), which may be used for guided reading. This may include picture books text (or texts) from which to plan.

Wayne Tennent
Wayne Tennent worked for many years as a primary teacher in London and also spent a number of years teaching overseas. He is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of East London. He teaches on MA Education and doctoral programmes. His particular area of interest is literacy, and specifically, the reading comprehension process. He has worked for a number of years with schools – both primary and secondary – developing pedagogical practices to support the teaching of reading comprehension. His book, Understanding Reading Comprehension, was published in 2015. He also co-authored Guiding Readers – Layers of meaning, (pub: 2016).
